MR. FIX IT

I never cease to mavel at the kind of staff I work with here in Maiduguri.

One is a security guard who has been a professional driver for more than twenty years. Another one is a gardener, who is also a professional photographer. Yet another one is a cleaner as well as a very good launderer. And there is a security guard who holds a diploma and a couple of certificates but never hesitates to take on menial jobs such as carpentry, masonry and whatever comes his way to make ends meet. Another wonder guy is a security guard who is a professional carpenter, gardener and a mason. He is very good in all the three professions. But the one that beats them all is a guy who started work as a clerical officer but worked his way up and acquired a degree! But that's not what really amazes me about this guy. What really makes the hair stand on my head is this guy's knack for manually repairing things. Need some electrical work? This guy can fix it. Carpentry? Masonry? Plumbing? Generator repair?  You name them and this guy, without any formal training, can fix them.

In short, I've gradually come to regard him as my Majordomo and Mr. Fix it! He is what the famous Hausa singer, late Alhaji Mamman Shata Katsina, would call, "Gatarin-gwari: A yi gini da kai, a yi sara kuma a dauka a yi jifa".
