Recently, one of our drivers was flagged down by officials of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and asked to show his driver's licence. When they found it to be up to date, they asked for vehicle particulars. I told them it was a Federal Government vehicle and drivers were not given those documents. Determined to find fault, they then asked for a log book. The driver brought out the Driver's Log Book in which the vehicle's movement, fuel purchases etc were duly logged. Being a stickler to standard procedure, I had always insisted that the book was duly filled.
But I was taken aback when the FRSC official said it wasn't the log book he was asking for. I told him there was another log book in which the vehicle's repairs were duly recorded but that was kept in the office. He insisted that there was another log book. My question is which other log book is there supposed to be? Can anybody enlighten me please?
I have always been a law abiding citizen and I always stick to rules and regulations in whatever I do. I remember I was once asked by a police officer to show my official vehicle's allocation letter and since then I have always carried it along with me.
I first learnt how to drive in 1977 when I was in form 4 (now SSS 1) in secondary school, using my grandfather's car. And I acquired my first driver's licence when I was an undergraduate at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria in 1986, because my father wouldn't allow me drive him until I acquired a driver's licence. So, I was tested by a competent Vehicle Inspection Officer (V.I.O.) in Zaria, who confirmed that I was competent to drive a car after passing the test - not what obtains these days. Since then, I had always renewed my driver's licence as and when due because I hate to be found wanting in anything.
So, can someone out there tell me what other log book should drivers of government vehicles carry along apart from the one I showed the FRSC official?
