OUR ORPHANS

Saturday, September 18, 2020, will go down in history as, probably, one of Umar and Abdullahi Comrade Mukhtar’s happiest day and also on the other hand, one of their saddest. It was the day their kid sister, Halimatu Mukhtar, got married but also a day that  coincided with the day they lost their dad 18 years ago. Not long after that, they also lost their mum. Their sweet candy was taken out of their mouths while they were still kids.

They grew up as orphans, but being members of an extended and prominent family, the late Alhaji Barau Bakori Family, they were raised by the family and lacked for nothing.

Their father, late Muntari Ɗangwaggo, an upcoming politician at the time, was my cousin from both my father's and my mother’s side: my father was his father’s elder brother and my mother was his mother’s elder sister. Our grandparents, late Alhaji Barau Bakori and late Ibrahim Namowa, who were friends and business associates, decided in their wisdom to join the hands of two sets of their children in marriage. And these poor orphans were some of the offspring of those blessed unions.

Aside from our dual relationship with their father, their mum’s father, late Alhaji Garba Faci Bakori, was also married to my aunt (the daughter of my maternal grandfather, Ibrahim Namowa).

So, last Saturday was, indeed, a day to remember with sadness and joy in the history of that great family.

May Allah bless the union and have mercy on the departed souls.
