You may recall that in my last post on the Bakori security challenge, I mentioned that equipment had been purchased for the vigilantes. One of the equipment is the walkie-talkies they use to communicate with each other and especially to raise alarm.
There are more than one hundred of these communication gadgets used not only by the vigilantes, but by the security agents and many other individuals. They use the walkie-talkies to attract the attention of everyone using the gadget whenever something untoward is noticed. Within a short time hundreds of people will converge on the scene.
They also use it to seek for help in cases of emergency. For instance, yesterday in the morning, there was a fire incident in some of the shops alongside the main market road. Instantly, people were summoned to to go and quench the fire.
In other instances, I've heard stories of how local thieves were surrounded and arrested with the aid of the communication gadgets. Thieves who, in the dark of the night, sneak into nearby farms to steal farm produce have suddenly discovered that it is no longer business as usual. Many farmers who left their farm produce overnight returned in the morning and found them intact even without a guard sleeping in the farm.
Other criminals who were fond of committing atrocities in graveyards were also arrested. Several adulterers and fornicators who committed their various offences at night, both at homes and in the bush were found in the act and arrested.
I think it's high time all communities came together and guarded themselves not only against bandits' attacks, but against all kinds of criminals.
