Following the cash crunch caused by the naira recoloring in Nigeria, kidnappers in the northern part of the country now demand ransom in CFA Franc, the currency used in Niger Republic.
Credible sources have,on 19th February 2023, confirmed the kidnap of Nana Ma'aruf, Wasila Shafi'i and A'isha Aliyu at Ka'ida ward of Jibiya town in Katsina State, Nigeria.
The three ladies comprised a married woman and two girls. The terrorists used the opportunity of the early evening prayer to sneak into the town and kidnap the three ladies, in spite of the presence of troops and civilian vigilantes.
Citizens of Jibiya Local Government Area had hoped for a lull in incidents of kidnap since the currency swap programme of the Nigerian Central Bank took effect, but it resurfaced in the last seven days.
Sources in Jibiya revealed that kidnappers demanded for ransom in CFA Franc. The sources, however, moaned that several factors had combined to impoverish the people to the extent that they had no resources to sell and convert to hard currency.
They, therefore, have no means of paying the ransom demanded by the bandits.
